I pulled my kids in and out for three years and finally stuck them with me at home for the long run...after a year of finding our groove we all LOVE it and after cracking the budget I realized I was SAVING money...You can check out my theories more and journey on this on the Homeschooling label on my blog. It sounds like you really tried to take a step back when making this choice for your child, which is can be a difficult thing to do. And, speaking from a Mommy who has had the pleasure of working at the same school where her son attends, that's not all it's cracked up to be either. Imagine seeing your kiddo in the hallway and having to explain why he can't go with you right at that second. The teachers also find you for every little behavior challenge as well, and it's hard to be an advocate and a colleague as well. Even better- volunteer in your son's class! That would be a happy medium, I think. Best of luck on your journey!
